Safety and
Security
Safety of our students and facility is of the highest importance. One area of concern is the possibility that a bad actor could stowaway in a school building. The concern stems from the lack of building security, visitor screening and limited engagement after school hours. I have attended many activities both during and after school hours, where I have been able to roam the building freely.
Many of our gyms and classrooms are used for community education programs throughout the year with seemingly little security oversight. For example, adults attending the morning lap swim from 5 am to 7 am at the Discovery pool are given key fobs to let themselves into the building. Gyms are also open for Pickleball and Basketball programs. For someone that wants to do ill harm, the opportunity is real.
As a member of the Alexandria school board, I will ask questions regarding security and request district officials investigate hardening some of these areas. Priority must be given in reducing the likelihood of any suspicious persons having easy access to our students and facility.
